What is 1 LSAT point worth? The scholarship math at 196 law schools

Every point you leave on the table costs money. You can work out roughly how much from what each law school files with the ABA. We did it for all 196.

$3,000a yearper LSAT point at the median school, across the middle half of the class
$9,000that same point over 3 years of law school
149 of 193schools where 1 point lines up with $2,000 or more a year

How it's figured: the class's 75th percentile grant minus its 25th, divided by its 75th percentile LSAT minus its 25th. Grants among students who got one, from each school's 2025 ABA 509 report.

How should you read the per-point number?

Take Fordham. Its 2025 class ran from a 165 LSAT at the 25th percentile to a 170 at the 75th, a 5-point spread. Its grants ran from $25,000 at the 25th percentile to $43,000 at the 75th, an $18,000 gap. Divide the gap by the spread and you get $3,600 a year per point. That's the whole method.

It's a class-level figure. Schools don't publish who got which dollar amount, so this assumes grants follow the numbers, which is how merit scholarship matrices work. Read it as the slope of the class, not an offer.

The grant figures only count students who got a grant. So the paid-full-price share sits next to every number. At a school where 30% of the class paid full price, the per-point figure says nothing about that 30%. Harvard, Yale, and Stanford give aid on need, not numbers, so the table doesn't print a figure for them.

Above a school's 75th percentile the class data runs out. More points there might still help, and this data can't show it either way.

Points also change where you sit in each class, and that matters for getting in. The law school scholarship calculator puts both on one screen: enter your LSAT and GPA, pick your schools, and see where you sit in each class and what 3 or 5 more points do there.

I’ve been coaching the LSAT since 2005. Honestly, this is the number I show students who ask whether a few more points are worth another month of study.

Questions people ask about LSAT points and scholarships

What is 1 LSAT point worth in scholarship money?

At the median ABA law school in 2025, about $3,000 a year in grant money across the middle half of the class, or about $9,000 over 3 years. It runs from $0 at schools with a flat grant range to $9,010 at Hofstra. It's a class-level figure from 509 data, not an offer.

How is the per-point figure calculated?

Take the class's 75th percentile grant, subtract its 25th percentile grant, and divide by the gap between its 75th and 25th percentile LSAT. The grant figures count only full-time students who got a grant, which is why the share who paid full price sits next to every number.

Does a higher LSAT always mean more scholarship money?

No. Above a school's 75th percentile the class data runs out. Schools that give aid on need don't price points at all. And some share of every class pays full price. At most schools, though, the LSAT usually carries more weight in the merit matrix than GPA does.

Where does the data come from?

Each school's 2025 ABA Standard 509 Information Report: the 25th and 75th percentile LSAT, the 25th and 75th percentile grant among full-time students who got one, and the share of the class that paid full price.

Source: ABA Standard 509 Information Reports, 2025 entering class, compiled by LSAT Unplugged. Grant figures are full-time grants among recipients. LSAT is a registered trademark of the Law School Admission Council, which does not endorse this tool.
