Is Law School Worth It? Run the Numbers on Any ABA School.
Pick a school, put in your grant, and see the 3-year cost, the monthly payment, and what the class of 2024 actually did for work.
This is arithmetic on public ABA filings and the numbers you type. It isn't financial advice.
Sample: Georgetown, $0 grant, out of state. Put your own in the form.
Schools with a lower net and equal or better outcomes
How the numbers work. Tuition is each school’s own 2025 ABA Standard 509 filing, full nonresident price or the resident rate at a public school, times 3. Your grant is subtracted from that, never below 0. The payment line finances the federal cap ($50,000 a year, $200,000 total for law) at the 8.07% graduate unsubsidized rate with the 1.057% origination fee, verified 2026-09-06; any net above the cap isn't modeled and isn't included in the payment. Outcomes are each school's Class of 2024 ABA Employment Summary, filed 10 months after graduation. Compare schools are priced at full tuition, since you're in-state for at most one state. Verify any figure against the school's own 509 report or Employment Summary before you act on it. LSAT is a registered trademark of the Law School Admission Council, which does not endorse this tool. How the bar moved on price
Among the 144 ABA schools that filed sticker tuition in both years, the median full-price tuition went from $38,548 in 2011 to $55,142 in 2025. That's the sticker price only, before any grant. Questions people ask before they run the numbers
Is law school worth it?
Run your own school and grant on this page and read the 3 tiles: net cost, monthly payment, and what the class ahead of you actually did for work. Those numbers are the honest answer. The call is yours.
What counts as "FTLT bar-passage-required"?
The ABA's own definition: a full-time, long-term job, still held 10 months after graduation, that requires bar passage. JD Advantage jobs, where the degree helps but no license is needed, are counted separately and aren't in this number. It's the cleanest single employment number the ABA collects, because it excludes part-time work, short-term work, and jobs that don't need a JD.
Why no salary numbers?
The 509 filing this page draws from doesn't report starting salaries. NALP publishes a bimodal salary curve for new lawyers that's real, but we don't have a current cited figure to put on this page, so it shows outcome shares, not paychecks.
Why isn't Grad PLUS in the math?
Grad PLUS ended for new borrowers on July 1, 2026. This page finances the federal cap at the unsubsidized graduate rate instead, and prints the amount above that cap separately.
What's the 3-year sticker?
3 times this year's filed tuition, full price or resident rate, whichever applies to you. Tuition rises most years, so treat the 3-year sticker as a floor: your actual 3 years will likely run higher.
Why does the compare list use FTLT?
Full-time, long-term, bar-passage-required work is the ABA's cleanest job number, and every school files it the same way, so schools compare on equal terms.
