Unplugged Practice Test: Logical Reasoning Set 2, Question 20 (Must Be True)
Taking the test? Finish it first. This page shows the answer.
- These questions ask what must be true given the statements.
- Predict what a correct answer needs to do before you read the choices.
- Every question on this test is original, written to the same logical skeletons as real questions, and Steve checked every one himself before release.
The question
Storage manager: Tenants must empty a unit and take off their locks within 5 days after a lease ends. The facility is entitled to empty any unit that still holds goods more than 5 days after a lease ends, and each time it does so it bills the tenant for the labor. Any tenant whose unit still holds goods 10 days after a lease ends receives a written warning, and a warning always results in a fee unless the tenant can document an emergency.
20. Suppose everything the manager says is accurate. Which one of the following must then also be true?
- (A)Every tenant who fails to empty a unit within 5 days after a lease ends is billed by the facility for the labor.
- (B)A tenant whose unit the facility empties 12 days after a lease ends is both billed for that labor and given a written warning.
- (C)A tenant who documents an emergency is not billed by the facility for emptying the unit.
- (D)Almost every tenant whose unit still holds goods 10 days after a lease ends pays a fee.
- (E)Every unit at the facility is empty within 12 days after a lease ends.
BWhy (B) is correct
Run the storage rules against (B). The facility empties a unit 12 days after the lease ends, past the 5-day mark, so it bills the tenant for the labor whenever it does the emptying. 12 days is also past the 10-day mark, so the written warning fires automatically. Both consequences follow from the same fact pattern, so B has to be true.
Why the other answers are wrong
AWhy (A) is wrong
(A) overstates it: the facility bills only when it actually empties a unit, and nothing says it always does.
CWhy (C) is wrong
(C) mixes up the 2 penalties, the emergency exception waives the fee tied to a warning, not the labor charge for emptying a unit.
DWhy (D) is wrong
(D) reaches past what's guaranteed: a warning results in a fee unless there's a documented emergency, but nothing says how often that happens.
EWhy (E) is wrong
(E) assumes the facility always empties overdue units by day 12, when the rules only say it's entitled to, not that it does.
